Arsenal bewildered by claims Mesut Ozil set to quit the club

Arsenal are understood to be bemused by speculation that star playmaker Mesut Ozil has rejected a contract and wants to leave the club.

Reports in Spain have suggested that the German international rejected the new deal, with claims that Barcelona are keen on signing the 27-year-old, as noted by The Mirror.

However, an Arsenal insider has notified the publication that no contract talks have even begun between the two parties, thus completely ruling out the notion that the World Cup winner has rejected an offer from the club.

Ozil still has still two and a half years remaining on his current deal, and the Gunners are said to be keen to keep him at the Emirates as after finding it difficult to initially settle, the former Real Madrid star has flourished this season as he adds consistency to his game.

The £42m signing in 2013 will hope to continue to play an influential role in Arsenal’s push for the Premier League title this season, as they prepare to face leaders Leicester City on Sunday looking to cut into their five-point lead at the top of the table.

Having ended a four-game winless streak in the league last time out against Bournemouth, the Gunners welcome their title rivals to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon hoping to shift the momentum in their favour.

Meanwhile, they remain confident that a new agreement will be reached when talks actually begin with Ozil, who will be fully focused on adding to his tally of six goals and 16 assists in 30 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
