Modern foes Paris Saint Germain and Chelsea will meet for the third successive season when they take to the field for their last 16 encounter later this evening.
Not much has separated these two in recent campaigns with Chelsea progressing on away goals when they meet in 2014, a feat repeated by PSG last year courtesy of a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
In competitive head to head fixtures Chelsea lead the way with two wins compared to PSG’s one with four of their meetings ending all square.
The London outfit will head to Paris in confident form after a stunning run of form that includes a 5-1 win over Newcastle in their last outing, and the side should be optimistic, with Branislav Ivanovic telling the Official Chelsea Website:
“This season hasn’t been going well for us but this is the kind of game we’ve been waiting for and hopefully it will be a turning point. It’s going to be very hard but it’s a great opportunity for us. Hopefully it will be our night. Of course we still have the second leg to play at home but what happens there will be based on the first game. We are excited and looking forward to it. Paris Saint-Germain are playing really well and dominating the French league, we are not where we want to be but we have improved massively and we are ready.”
With Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa back in form, the Blues are finally showing the traits that made them champions of England last season.
However they face a PSG side that has lost just once in 39 games and has the benefit of an extra day’s rest, something manager Guus Hiddink alluded to in the build up to the game.
PSG Boss Laurent Blanc commented to the Official UEFA Champions League website that there is not much between the sides tonight, commenting:
We’ll need to impose our game on Chelsea, a team who are capable of beating us. We met Chelsea in the past two seasons: they beat us once and we eliminated them once, which shows that the level of the two teams is very similar. The Champions League gives them an opportunity for positive things in an otherwise difficult season, and their manager is very experienced having won the competition already.”
PSG rested a number of players for the 0-0 draw with Lille at the weekend with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maxwell and Thiago Silva left out.
The pair are set to return on Tuesday although Javier Pastore and Marco Verratti are set to be sidelined through injury while Serge Aurier has been left out following controversial comments on social media at the weekend.
Chelsea meanwhile will have Matt Miazga and Alexandre Pato while John Terry (hamstring) is expected to be unavailable along with Kurt Zouma.
It should be a mouthwatering clash, just make sure you don’t miss a kick.
