Liverpool secured a goalless draw away at Augsburg at the WWK Arena on Thursday night in their round-of-32 Europa League clash.

Although both sides had few chances to win the game, it was Augsburg who went closest late on with Dong-Won Ji hitting the woodwork.

The two teams had played out a relatively even first half, with the hosts having the best chance right at the end of the opening 45 minutes.

However, Simon Mignolet was alert to the danger and was able to successfully deal with the threat in order to keep the encounter goalless as the away side were left frustrated with their inability to find a breakthrough.

The visitors started the second period with more urgency and began to play some better football, while in contrast the hosts were seemingly running out of ideas and became desperate in their search of taking some sort of advantage to Anfield next week.

Nevertheless, they came closest to snatching a victory as Ji sent his left-footed volley towards goal but saw it hit the post and go wide as a flat-footed Mignolet was given no chance.

Jurgen Klopp will be relatively pleased with the draw, and although he didn’t get the away goal that would have been ideal for the Reds, they will be confident about their chances of advancing in the competition in the second leg.

As they continue to trail fourth-placed Manchester City by nine points, the German tactician will be fully aware that the Europa League may well offer the best route to the Champions League next season.

Liverpool player ratings: Mignolet 7; Clyne 6, Toure 6, Sakho 6, Moreno 7; Milner 7, Henderson 7, Can 6, Coutinho 7; Firmino 7, Sturridge 6.

Substitutes: Origi 6, Ibe 6.
