The Spaniard appeared to injure himself attempting to make a save during his pre-match warm-up, and limped off the field with Sergio Romero starting the game in his place.

Although the Argentine shot-stopper has kept five clean sheets in his seven appearances this season, he hasn’t featured for Louis van Gaal since the opening few months of the campaign.

In turn, it remains to be seen whether or not it hurts United on the night, while there is no official word from the club on the extent of De Gea’s injury as of yet.

Having been linked with a move Real Madrid last summer, as reported by Sky Sports, De Gea overcame the distractions and disappointment of being dropped by Van Gaal earlier in the season to reemerge as a key player for the Red Devils.

In 31 appearances in all competitions so far this season, the 25-year-old has conceded 30 goals and kept 13 clean sheets. However, his injury will now be a concern for Van Gaal, with his side facing Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night, before the second leg of their Europa League clash with Midtjylland next Thursday.
