Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will return to Germany for a competitive game for the first time since taking charge in England.
Klopp’s side take on Augsburg in Europa League last-32 first-leg tie on Thursday. The Bundesliga outfit sit 14th in the table but despite their league position, Klopp has warned his side against complacency.
FC Augsburg v Liverpool Manager’s View
For Liverpool, manager Jurgen Klopp returns to Germany, telling LiverpoolFC.com,
“There aren’t too many German managers in foreign countries; most German managers work in Germany or as national coaches of African countries. So maybe coming back is just something special for the German press or some supporters. For me, it’s the Europa League and you always have to play in different countries. In this case, it’s Germany. The biggest advantage I have is that in the hotel I will understand each person – so that’s cool!”
Klopp has lost just twice in 10 meetings as a manager against the German side and he will hope to add to his 5 wins on Thursday.
Midfielder Lucas is fit again and could start at centre-half while the likes of Cameron Brannigan, Jon Flanagan, Carlos Teixeira and Brad Smith will all hope to be involved.
Youngster Kevin Stewart (ankle) and midfielder Adam Lallana (calf) both miss out due to injury while fit-again defender Dejan Lovren misses out because of a family illness.
Steven Caulker, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure could start alongside Lucas while Christian Benteke could line up with Daniel Sturridge up-front as the England man continues his re-integration into the team.
Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Emre Can could be rested although with a free weekend coming up due to a lack of FA Cup action, Klopp could yet give his first stars a run-out.
For Augsburg, they find themselves in a relegation battle in Bundesliga, but the encounter with Klopp’s Liverpool side should be welcome relief. Manager Markus Weinzierl told BBC.co.uk
“We’re pleased that the game is finally here, and that we can concentrate on it 100%.
“It may perhaps be a slight advantage that I know Klopp. We have been following Liverpool closely but we will prepare for them in the same way as we do any other match.”
Augsburg v Liverpool Match Prediction
Liverpool smashed six past Aston Villa last weekend but it remains to be seen what sort of side Klopp will put out for the away tie in Germany tonight. Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge may be rested for this one with the Reds looking to fire past the German side at Anfield in the return leg.
Augsburg could be a touch of value at a large looking price of 3/1 and that represents value.
