Ed Woodward called agent for top Man United target right after Europa League loss

Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward apparently wasted no time planning a major shakeup in the ranks after the club were humiliated in a 2-1 defeat to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League yesterday. Following the match, the Man United exec contacted the agent for the club’s most popular candidate for replacement manager: Jose Mourinho.

According to the Metro, Woodward called Jorge Mendes – Mourinho’s super-agent – after the match and inquired as to whether the former Chelsea manager and Premier League title winner would be able to join the club before the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The loss against Danish side Midtjylland followed the club’s stunning loss to lowly Sunderland over the weekend, which in turn sent the public demands to fire manager Louis van Gaal into overdrive.

Mourinho recently stated that he was not interested in taking over the reins at Inter Milan, and previous reports indicated he was turning down offers from across Europe in expectation of taking over Louis van Gaal‘s position at Manchester United.

The Special One was fired from Chelsea in mid-December after the worst start to a Premier League title defense in BPL history. Last season he led the club to the title as well as the League Cup title.
