Former Aston Villa star Paul Merson has revealed his concern with the current situation at Villa Park and believes it could get even worse.
Remi Garde’s side suffered a humiliating 6-0 home loss to Liverpool last weekend, which in turn ensured that they remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
While they remain just eight points adrift of safety, their overall form this season hasn’t suggested that they have what it takes to launch a successful bid to avoid the drop.
Should the French tactician fail in his objective of securing their top flight status for another season, it remains to be seen what changes the club makes.
Merson, who played for the club between 1998 and 2002, has insisted that he is worried for their future as he was left disappointed and speechless with the lack of fight and effort from the players against Jurgen Klopp’s side, as reported by Sky Sports.
In turn, he believes that they are risking potentially going down to League One, as none of the players in the current squad would be of much interest to any of the clubs in the Premier League, which suggests that they will be stuck at Villa for the foreseeable future.
If the club are unable to sell and rebuild, then they may well have to rely on the individuals currently at their disposal, and in a difficult league such as the Championship, it remains to be seen whether or not they are good enough to dismiss the possibility of Merson’s fears coming true.
