Under-pressure Louis Van Gaal will hope to avoid a third successive defeat when he takes his Manchester United side to Shrewsbury for their FA cup fifth round tie.
The Red Devils have lost to Sunderland and FC Midtjylland in their last two outings and will head to Greenhouse Meadow without 14 of their players, including keeper David De Gea.
De Gea suffered a knee injury before the Europa League loss to FC Midtjylland and while he is not expected to be out for too long he won’t feature against the League One outfit.
Sergio Romero will deputise for the Spaniard while another key man missing will be Wayne Rooney. The forward was ruled out for 6 weeks last week and could be replaced by one of Michael Keane or Memphis Depay with Anthony Martial set to move into a more central role.
Back to back defeats have piled the pressure once more on Van Gaal and speaking ahead of the game, the former Ajax coach admitted that the clash with the League one side was a must-win for his team.
“You cannot continue with losing games,” the Dutch coach said. “You have to see every match as a match you have to win. On Monday, we have to win. If we win, we are in the next round and we are capable of winning The FA Cup.”
Despite the need to win, Van Gaal is not taking his opponents lightly, adding “The question is how we lift ourselves for this game, because Shrewsbury will fight for the second balls and play direct and those kind of things, and you have to cope,”
Shrewsbury meanwhile will have defender Jack Grimmer available while former Manchester United midfielder Larnell Cole will get the chance to face his former club after overcoming a groin injury.
Micky Mellon’s side are struggling near the bottom of League One, and the arrival of Manchester United will no doubt be a welcome relief to the side.
Manchester United are obviously heavily backed for victory tonight and to take their place in the FA Cup Quarter Final, but at 1/3 their price is certainly not going to set pulses racing. Instead, we’re backing the magic of the cup to return tonight and fancy a speculative punt on Shrewsbury to upset the odds.
The home side are available at around 10/1, and lets face it, Manchester Utd are counting down the days until Van Gaal leaves Old Trafford. A bad result tonight could mean this comes to fruition much quicker.
Get on the magic of the FA Cup!
