Liverpool will have one eye on Sunday’s Capital One Cup final when they take on Augsburg in the second leg of their last 32 Europa League tie early this evening.
The Reds hold a slender advantage in the clash after emerging from the first leg in Germany with a 0-0 draw. Jurgen Klopp’s side were the better side throughout the tie but failed to find a crucial away goal.
With the fixture very much on a knife-edge Klopp will not have the luxury of resting his biggest names ahead of the final against Manchester City.
That should ensure the likes of striker Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Philippe Coutinho, not to mention Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and possibly Roberto Firmino will be involved.
Definitely missing for the Reds will be Joe Allen and Martin Skrtel as they continue their recovery from Hamstring injuries while Adam Lallana is still over a recent calf problem.
Dejan Lovren is back training after injury but illness means he will miss out.
The first domestic final of the English year could prove to be an unwelcome distraction on Thursday with Klopp urging his players to focus on the job at hand first before concentrating on the trip to Wembley.
“If you think about the second step before the first step you will fall down. We have to be fully concentrated on this game.” Klopp said.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five home games while Augsburg have won their last two away fixtures ensuring they won’t be overawed by the occasion.
The Bundesliga outfit beat Hannover away last weekend to climb to 13th in the table, a far cry from the 5th place finish they experienced last campaign.
Ja Cheol-Koo, a substitute in Europe last week, scored the all-important winner and it remains to be seen if he can force his way into the starting line-up as a result.
Liverpool are heavily backed into favourites for the win at a price of 4/11, but with a Capital One Cup Final to look forward to on Sunday, a clean bill of health is just as important for Jurgen Klopp’s side who are expected to brush aside their German opponents.
Those who expect a shock Augsburg victory can back the away win at a value looking price of 9/1, considering the away side have already won seven times on their travels this season.
It should be a nervy affair, but one in which Liverpool should emerge victorious at Anfield.
