Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has urged his players to show him “they are horny” when they take to the field of play for their last 32 second leg tie with FC Midtjylland.
The Reds Devils trail their Danish counter-parts 2-1 following the first leg and another poor showing on Thursday would lead for yet more calls for Van Gaal to leave the club.
Speaking ahead of the game Van Gaal called for his players to step up to the table, telling reporters “I was not a great player, as you know, but when I played for full stadiums I was always at my best,” Van Gaal said. “It is not a good signal for Manchester United.
“I think most the players shall be excited and for them it is the match of their lives, especially at Old Trafford and not at home.
“It is always the reason why I say that top teams have to cope with the resistance of their opponent also.”
The Dutchman then interjected when reporters asked Juan Mata about the need to match the desire of the FC Midtjylland players, adding “You are right, you are right – your word is fantastic: desire. Hungry and a lot of times I use the word horny to my players.”
One man that won’t be too “horny” on Thursday is David De Gea. The Spanish keeper is set to miss his third straight game due to knee injury sustained in the warm-up last week.
Wayne Rooney, midfielder Marouane Fellaini (muscle injury) and defender Matteo Darmian (shoulder) are also set to miss out while Antonio Valencia, out since October, is nearing fitness but will not be available.
Defender Chris Smalling will be assessed after sustaining a knock in the 3-0 FA cup win over Shrewsbury while Donald Love comes back into contention and the returning Marcos Rojo.
The Red Devils are unbeaten in nine European home games since losing 2-1 to Real Madrid in the 2012-13 Champions League while FC Midtjylland have lost their last two European away games without scoring, conceding six goals in the process.
Predictably, Man Utd are heavy favourites to overturn their first leg result, but at 1/4 would you really pile into Van Gaal’s side confidently at the moment?
On paper this looks like a straight forward home win, but Old Trafford is becoming increasingly restless – whose backing the away win at a mouth watering price of 14/1?
