Liverpool secured a 2-0 half-time lead over Manchester City at Anfield on Wednesday night, with James Milner producing this smart finish to put his side in control.
Adam Lallana had given the hosts the lead just minutes earlier as his long-range effort evaded the out-stretched hand of Joe Hart, although the England international will be left disappointed to have conceded in such fashion.
Nevertheless, there was little he could have done to deny Milner, who took the ball in his stride with a wonderful first touch before stroking the ball past Hart and into the back of the net to put Jurgen Klopp’s men in the driving seat.
Having fallen to an agonising defeat in the Capital One Cup on Sunday, the Reds came out with plenty of desire and energy as they hounded City down in possession throughout the opening period, as they continue to try and push their way up the table.
In contrast, Manuel Pellegrini’s side appear set to slip up in their bid to close the gap on the top sides, as they remain 10 points adrift of Premier League leaders Leicester City, although they do have a game in hand over the Foxes.
However, if they are to leave Anfield with nothing to show for their efforts, it remains to be seen whether or not they will be able to close the gap over the remaining 11 games.
