It is a testament to the growth in quality in European football that this match is taking place in the last 16 round of the Europa League. Both Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham are doing well in their domestic leagues and many fans would prefer this fixture to some of those on offer in the Champions League.
It is the first time the two sides will have ever met in European competition and is set to be a cracking game, reigniting the traditional England/Germany based football rivalry which has been quiet in recent years.
This is the furthest Spurs have ever made it in the competition, and the fact they have reached this stage, while two points off the top of the Premier League, is a testament to the progress experienced under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership.
The test for Tottenham away from home will not be made any easier by the fact that Dortmund have a strong record against English clubs on their native soil.
Spurs’ chances have been made harder by the absences they will endure – including Dele Alli who will be suspended, and Danny Rose, who had to be withdrawn at the weekend due to cramp and is unlikely to feature in this contest. Spurs have had a tough run domestically as of late – losing in their home city to Crystal Palace and West Ham before recently drawing against arch rivals Arsenal.
Spurs will be hoping to return to their recent European ways – most recently knocking out Fiorentina 4-1 over both legs.
Much like their English visitors, Dortmund are also currently five points off the top on their domestic league.
Regardless of their domestic situation, Dortmund are unlikely to play at anything other than 100% intensity due to the notorious atmosphere created by their home fans.
The starting XI has an overabundance of talent to choose from with the only injury absence being Sokratis. The back four will not suffer from his absence, as both Hummels, Subotic and Bender are possible replacements eager to make things difficult for Harry Kane.
Tottenham are currently benefiting from a five point safety cushion in the top four of the Premier League but won’t squander this opportunity to make a mark in Europe this year.
It will be interesting to see whether Spurs choose to play it relatively safe, aiming to take a draw or away goal back to North London, or whether they throw caution to the wind in a memorable evening in Dortmund.
Those who think that Tottenham can pull of a first leg victory in Germany can pick up a very tasty 6/1 on the away win, and thats a price which is likely to see plenty of attention all things considered.
