Arsenal face an uphill challenge as they look to salvage their season. The Gunners travel to the Nou Camp to face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions league tie. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger’s men have it all to do.
Despite the size of the task at hand, Wenger is refusing to give up hope and believes his side can upset the odds and reach the last 8.
“Our approach was not bad in the first leg but we lost our balance and got caught,” he said at Tueday’s pre-match news conference.
“We are in a position where we don’t have to calculate too much. I don’t think we have to think too much. We need to score two or three goals, so it demands a very clear charge and we know we have to attack.
“We have gone through a disappointing spell and it is important to remain calm and strong.
“We have won everywhere in Europe, but not here yet. The players are united to give a strong performance.”
The French coach will have centre-back Laurent Koscielny following a four game absence with a calf injury and the defender will be in the firing line from the oft with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar in irresistible form.
Wenger is in dire need of a result after his side relinquished their hold on the FA cup with a 2-1 defeat at home to Watford. The London outfit also trail leaders Leicester City by 11 points in the league with just 9 games to play.
A result in Barcelona would ease the pressure on the veteran coach with many pundits and former players, including Emmanuel Petit calling for him to step aside but the odds are stacked against the Frenchman and his side.
Getting a result against Luis Enrique’s trailblazers won’t be easy though, the Catalan outfit are unbeaten in their last 37 games and have won the last 8 games, scoring 30 and conceding 5 and their price obviously reflects this at 1/4.
That said, its sure to attract the big hitters, howevber there’s probably more appeal in backing Barcelona with a two goal handicap at -2.
It could be a long night for Arsene Wenger’s side if they concede early there’s no worse position to be in when you face Suarez, Messi and Neymar.
Just take in this feast of top quality European football featuring arguably the greatest team of a generation.
