Bayern Munich and Juventus will meet on Wednesday in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie with it all to play for.
The current Bundesliga Champions let slip a 2-0 lead at the City of Juventus Stadium in the first leg to draw 2-2 and will be wary of avoiding another slip up at the hands of last season’s runners up in front of their own crowd.
Thomas Muller, a goal-scorer in the first game, is amongst those wary of the threat posed by the Italian side. Speaking to the official Bayern website, the German International said Juventus will set up defensively. We want to be dominant and efficient with our chances early on. I’m optimistic, but also wary, because Juventus created two goals from relatively little in the first leg.
“It’s going to be a lively battle, just as you want it to be in the Champions League. Perhaps it’s a bit early for this kind of an encounter to take place, in the round of 16, but that’s how it is. It will be very exciting.”
The good news for Bayern is that Juventus will be without key men Paulo Dybala, Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio although Old Lady boss Massimiliano Allegri is confident his side can cope with the experienced and talented trio.
“Our squad is capable of dealing with injuries. It’s not important who plays, but how they play,” Allegri said at a news conference on Tuesday. Whoever crosses the white line for us will put in a great display. Dybala does not have any torn muscles, but I decided to leave him at home because I didn’t want to risk him.
“We’ll decide [on Wednesday] about Mario Mandzukic. He trained with the team [on Tuesday] and is in good shape. Alvaro Morata’s condition is improving, he’s in great shape. It would have been tough for me to leave him out. I still haven’t decided on my starting XI.”
Juventus will definitely be without Martin Caceres while Bayern will be missing Jerome Boateng (groin) and Holger Badstuber (ankle). Javi Martinez is back in training and could feature for the first time since January while Mario Gotze is also in line to play after featuring in the 5-0 win over Wolfsburg last weekend.
The home side, Bayern are overwhelming favourites tonight at 2/5, a price we find a little prohibitive, and a side of the class of Juventus should not be 8/1.
Get on the away win with a one goal handicap at 2/1, which looks more than a touch of value.
