Ander Herrera injury: Louis van Gaal reveals why Spaniard misses Manchester United v Liverpool

Posted by

Louis van Gaal has told the club’s official Twitter account that a groin strain has ruled Ander Herrera out of Manchester United’s Europa League game at home to Liverpool this evening.

The Spanish midfielder was a surprise omission from United’s starting lineup for the second leg of their last-16 tie at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils trailing 2-0 from last week’s game at Anfield.

Herrera has started seven out of United’s last eight games in all competitions, with the only exception being the trip to Merseyside, but Van Gaal was not prepared to take a risk with his fitness tonight.

In the 26-year-old’s absence, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini start in the centre of the park for the visitors, with Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger left on the bench.

Herrera has not always been a regular under Van Gaal, but he has still clocked up 33 appearances this season, including seven in Europe. He is their highest-scoring central midfielder with five goals.
