Its been three days of exhilerating Grade One action from Cheltenham this week and now punters and fans are set for the big one, its time for the Cheltenham Gold Cup!
The race is wide open this year with four major players with a decent chance of taking the crown, Don Poli, Don Cossack, Cue Card and Djakadam.
Don Cossack leads the markets as favourite and it would take a shrewd punter to back against him today.
Pick up Enhanced Prices on the Gold Cup:
Although the horse fell with two out in the King George he was perfectly placed and is sure to go very close this afternoon. Retained jockey Bryan Cooper has decided to ride Don Cossack instead of Don Poli, which gives an indication as to how much the yard fancies his chances. Currently 3/1.
Next in the market is Don Poli, who is a tried and trusted goer, and has already won twice at Cheltenham. Without setting the world on fire, Wille Mullins will be hopeful his horse can capture the Gold Cup which has eluded the Irish trainer so far.
A six length win in the RSA Chase at the Festival last year impressed and with only one defeat over fences is a major player. Currently 5/1
Colin Tizzard’s Cue Card could cap off a remarkable year by taking a further £1m bonus if he can take the prize today, following wins in the Betfair Chase and King George VI Chase. The horse has come back to his best following a second wind op and connections are quite rightly hopeful of a good race today, ahaving already beaten current Ryanair Chase winner Vautour. Should go close at 4/1
Djakadam is the horse on everyone’s lips coming into the race, and last years runner up could cap of what has been an incredible Cheltenham Festival for the Irish trainer Willie Mullins.
The horse definitely has a touch of class about him, but a fall in the Betbright Gold Cup in March left him with a cut to his chest, which is not ideal preparation for the vigours of the Gold Cup track. Connections are highly positive about the horse. Currently 3/1.
The best of the rest could be Smad Place, who won the Hennessy this season, and is a bold runner who should lead from the front. Alan King is hopeful the horse can put in an inspired performance and could offer value at 10/1.
It should prove to be a remarkable race and surely one not to be missed
