Newcastle one of five sides eyeing Manchester United international

According to reports, Newcastle United are one of a quintet of sides to have contacted Manchester United‘s Michael Carrick ahead of a potential summer transfer.

Goal report that the Magpies have approached the 34-year-old, whose contract comes to an end in the summer, about a possible switch to St James’ Park at the end of the campaign.

However, Rafael Benitez’s side face competition for the veteran playmaker, with a report suggesting that four other sides are monitoring the situation and are also keen on signing the midfielder.

Similarly, Carrick himself appears likely to want to hold off on agreeing terms with another club, with Goal [as above] suggesting that England international is keen on remaining at United even though contract talks have not yet been forthcoming.

The passmaster has faced increasing competition for his spot in the first team this season, with players such as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini all competing for berths in the heart of the park.

Should should he resign himself to leaving the club, Newcastle may be an appealing option, with Carrick having been raised in nearby Wallsend, before moving to West Ham United in 1997.
