Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a late equaliser against Sunderland on Sunday, earning his side a share of the spoils in the Tyne-Wear derby.
Both sides knew the importance of Sunday’s clash heading into the encounter, as not only was there pride at stake, but the result would arguably have had a significant impact on the race to avoid relegation.
Following Norwich City’s win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, the Canaries had opened up a three-point gap between themselves and the drop zone, and so the pressure was on both Newcastle and Sunderland to respond.
The visitors took the lead late on in the first half through Jermain Defoe, as the veteran striker took full advantage of some lazy defending from the hosts to send his effort into the back of the net.
Rafa Benitez needed to get a reaction out of his players after the interval, but the Spanish tactician was forced to wait until the 83rd minute before Mitrovic was able to get them back on level terms.
With both sides remaining in the bottom three with a point apiece from the derby, the pursuit of Premier League safety goes on in what is shaping up to be a fascinating end to the season.
