Özil injury blow as Arsenal star sits out Germany training

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil is a doubt due to injury ahead of Germany’s clash with England, with the World Cup winner missing training due to an ankle injury (via IBT).

Özil has been superb for Arsenal this season, and was a driving force for the north London club during the first half of the campaign. It’s no coincidence that the club’s poor form coincided with a dip in his own, and a serious injury would be a real blow.

The injury was picked up during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton, with the German international taking a nasty kick to the ankle which eventually saw him forced off. It didn’t appear to be a hugely serious injury, but clearly there are concerns if he’s set to miss at least one of his side’s international friendlies.

While there’s nothing concrete on the seriousness of his injury, the fact that we’ve heard very little means you’d expect him to be back in time for Arsenal’s next Premier League fixture. They really can’t afford to have him unavailable for any length of time, not only because he’s such a massive player for them, but also due to the other injuries they are currently suffering from.

Their next game is against Watford in the Premier League, and after the embarrassing display they put in against them in the FA Cup, Arsenal will have a point to prove. They also can’t afford to drop any more points if they are to have any chance of lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of the season, and while even without dropping a single point between now and the end of the campaign it seems unlikely they’ll clinch the title, it’s always possible that both Leicester and Tottenham could falter under the pressure.
