Video: Germany 1-0 England – Toni Kroos beats injured Jack Butland off Mesut Ozil assist

Perhaps the depth at goalkeeper on the Three Lions side isn’t as strong as we once suspected. After starting Jack Butland over injured starter Joe Hart at the stopper position, the injury bug reared its ugly head at a critical point in the friendly against Germany to push England’s roster to the limit – but not before German midfielder Toni Kroos broke the scoreless tie with a goal of his own.

Late in the first half, it looked as though Butland had suffered some kind of non-contact bruise to the leg that began hampering him. Unfortunately, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos were not about to let a golden opportunity go to waste and quickly set up a chance that Kroos smashed past the diving Butland to take the 1-0 lead.

The reaction from the England bench was pointed as even Roy Hodgson appeared to look up at the football gods and question his bad luck. (At least, luck is the word we assume he was using…)

Hodgson has lost Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling and Joe Hart due to injuries for this key stretch of games ahead of Euro 2016.
