Tonight’s El Clasico had largely failed to live up to the billing until Karim Benzema equalised for Real Madrid with this wonderful overhead kick at the Camp Nou.
Marcelo’s powerful forward gallop eventually resulted in Toni Kroos putting in a cross which was deflected upwards, and Benzema acrobatically volleyed into the goal.
The strike was a landmark one for the Frenchman. It marked his best-ever scoring campaign for Los Blancos with 21 La Liga goals, which have come from only 21 starts.
Benzema’s 62nd-minute effort cancelled out Gerard Pique’s 56th-minute header in a match that Real must win to stand any chance of catching Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
The Catalan giants are 10 points clear with eight games to play, with second-place Atletico Madrid sandwiched between them, and are also on a 39-match unbeaten run.
