Tottenham plotting £20m transfer raid for box-to-box international midfielder

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Zenit St-Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel.

As noted by The Sun, the box-to-box powerhouse is keen on moving to the Premier League, and the tabloid note that the 27-year-old could leave Russia if Spurs make a bid of £20 million.

For a player with some of his best years ahead of him, the price appears generous, and with Spurs almost certainly set to be competing in the Champions League next summer, the midfielder possesses the kind of quality to make a difference at the elite continental level of competition.

The Lilywhites already have a considerable roster of Belgian players, with Mousa Dembele, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Nacer Chadli all key members of the first team, and apparently see Witsel as a fine addition to their current options.

Should be move to White Hart Lane, Witsel will need to compete with the likes of Ryan Mason, Dele Alli, Nabil Bentaleb, Tom Carroll and Eric Dier for a spot in the heart of the park.

Witsel, who will likely feature for the Red Devils at the 2016 European Championships this summer, began his career with Standard Liege, moved to Benfica in 2011 and then switched to Zenit in 2012.
