Manchester City will continue their rise to the top of the European football tree when they take on Paris Saint Germain in their first ever Champions League quarter-final from the Parc Des Princes tonight.
When the two sides last met in a competitive game, the landscape at both clubs was very different.
The year was 2008 and the competition was the Europa League. There was no Middle Eastern owners involved in Paris while Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment had just bought into City three months earlier.
The game finished 0-0 with the likes of Elano, Jo and one Daniel Sturridge lining out for City. Fast forward 8 years and a combined 6 league titles, both are considered amongst the big sides in Europe. Big names such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Yaya Toure, Angel di Maria and Sergio Aguero grace both sides.
With domestic glory achieved in recent years, the focus is now to cement their status amongst Europe’s elite by adding the Champions League trophy to the cabinet.
So far, both sides have failed to turn localised success into European honours.
Wednesday’s clash in Paris will be a chance for PSG to inflict more misery on the Premier League. Laurent Blanc’s side have already knocked out Chelsea, doing so in the last round with a convincing 4-2 aggregate win.
The Ligue 1 one side have lost just one of their last 19 home games in the Champions league, a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2015. They face a City side that has won only one of their six games in the Champions League knockout stages.
The good news for City is that PSG will be missing Marco Verratti and Javier Pastore through groin and calf injuries respectively although Di Maria is available. Manuel Pellegrini will be without captain Vincent Kompany (calf), Raheem Sterling (groin) and Yaya Toure (knee) while Joe Hart is fit.
Predictably, PSG are the favourites coming into the game with home advantage, but there’s little doubt that his is a big opportunity for Manchester City to get a result and fly the flag for the Premier League.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side thrashed Bournemouth at Dean Court last weekend which should put them in good stead for tonight’s clash, however it does look an uphill battle for City.
PSG are very strong at home, with only one loss in their last 19 Champions League matches since 2012, although the 8/11 on the home win tonight look a little short.
Laurent Blanc’s side do tend to concede so going the PSG win + both teams to score double chance looks worthy at 5/2.
