Jurgen Klopp will make an emotional return to Signal Iduna Park when his brings his Liverpool side to Germany to face his old side Borussia Dortmund in the Europa league this evening.
This will be first competitive meeting between the sides since 2001. The last time they met in Dortmund in the Champions’ league group stages, it finished 0-0 with the Reds winning 2-0 at home.
However given their respective forms, a repeat result is unlikely this round. Dortmund are currently 2nd in the Bundesliga, enjoying one of their most successful seasons, point wise, in German football.
Liverpool means are proving inconsistent. The league cup finalists are currently 9th in the league, 9 points off the Champions league places and 8 points off 5th.
The Europa league represents their best hope this season of securing a trophy and probably more importantly Champions League football.
While the game will be an emotional affair for Klopp, his opposite number, Thomas Tuchel knows that sentiment will go out the window once the whistle goes.
“Anything else but a warm welcome for Jurgen Klopp will be a surprise,” Tuchel said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Before adding: “From the moment the whistle goes Jurgen Klopp will want nothing else than to win. And we too. It’s not the first time I’ve welcomed Klopp back to an ex-club. This is the sixth time for me. It’s a routine.”
The Reds have more to worry about them emotion however with five Liverpool players walking tightropes heading into the game. On the creative side Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, expected to play after being passed fit midweek, are just a misdemeanour away from missing the Anfield return. As too are defenders Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne.
Dortmund meanwhile are hopeful that Germany international Ilkay Gundogan will be fit for the game.
Predictably, Thomas Tuchel’s side are favourites for the match at a price of around 4/7, and all things considered that looks about right. His Dortmund team have only suffered one defeat at home all season and have kept six clean sheets out of their last eight at home.
That said, the script is written for former manager Klopp, who spend seven successful years at the German club to come away with a shock victory with his Liverpool side, who appear to have turned something of a corner with their recent performances.
The Reds can be backed at 5/1 to take a first leg lead back to Anfield, but for us, this looks like one game to simply enjoy.
