The Grand National is one of the biggest races of the National Hunt season. 40 runners go to post for one of racing’s greatest spectacles run over 4 mile 3f.
Course form is a huge help. Don’t forget to read our 2017 Grand National Guide to Picking up free bets for more information. Horses that run well in previous years always run well around here.
Many Clouds won the race last year off 11 stone 9lb. He carries just 1lb higher this year. He’s had a great preparation for the race and he will take an awful lot of beating yet again. I couldn’t back him at 8/1 in a 40 runner race though.
I think there’s better value to be had elsewhere. Shutthefrontdoor has been laid out for this race for the past two year. Last year he finished 5th behind Many Clouds.
He’s 7lb better off with that rival this time round. He should get closer to that rival now and has Barry Geraghty in the saddle. This horse stays really well and runs off a nice mark, if the ground stays dry I think he’ll have a great chance.
Another J P McManus horse I like is Gallant Oscar. He’s another one who has been laid out for the race. He was 4th in last year Thyestes Chase to Djackadam, that race has always proved to be a decent trial for this race.
He was 3rd to The Druids Nephew at Cheltenham last season and finished the season off with a decent win at the Punchestown Festival. He’s had a quite prep for this race.
He was going really well when he unseated in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown and ran a decent race to be 5th last time out at Navan. He wasn’t given a hard race that day and the winner was 3rd here on Day 1. There the main two I like. T
he Last Samuri has come into his own this season for trainer Kim Bailey. He won the big trial for this race at Haydock. He is going to take a fair bit of beating in this race. Again though I don’t think he’s value at 9/1 in a 40 runner race.
I wouldn’t put you off him though. Of the others you could give chances to Saint Are.
He was 2nd in this race to Many Clouds last year. He’s 2lb better off with Many Clouds this time round and he comes into the race in top form. He won a decent staying chase at Doncaster last time out.
He’s bound to be there or there abouts again. Morning Assembly was a talented novice chaser a few seasons back until he got injured. He has run some nice races this season without winning. His 4th at Cheltenham last time out was a great run and I think he’ll give Davy Russell a good spin around. He has a live chance at 25/1.
Of the outsiders I’d give On His Own and First Lieutenant a chance and The Romford Pele a chance.
The first two bring a lot of class to the race. On His Own has run some gallant races in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and First Lieutenant has won and placed in several Grade 1 chases.
His 3rd in the Hennessey behind Smad Place this season is top form. The Romford Pele has caught my eye a few times this season. He gets in as number 40. He only has to carry 10 stone 4lb on his back.
He was a really good 3rd to Thistlecrack in a graded hurdle at Cheltenham earlier in the season and he ran a cracking race to be 8th in the Pertemps at Cheltenham last time out.
That race has been a good trial for this race, Pineau de Re ran in that and then won this.
Horses that run over hurdles and preserve their chase mark have always gone well in this.
To sum up, I think Many Clouds will go close to repeating last years win but he has stiff competition from Shutthefrontdoor, Gallant Oscar, Saint Are and The Last Samuri.
