Barcelona coach offers strong defence after controversial Dani Alves wig video

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has defended Dani Alves after the right-back’s controversial wig video.

Speaking on his Instagram account, the Catalans’ wideman—wearing a wig—appeared to joke about Barca’s Champions League quarter-final elimination at the hands of Atletico Madrid, and certainly didn’t demonstrate an understanding of the reigning champions’ bitter failure.

Having won the first leg 2-1 following a Luis Suarez brace, the Catalan giants were favourites to advance past their La Liga rivals into the semi-final of the continental showpiece, only for an Antoine Griezmann double to send them crashing out in the return leg.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted there had been some discontent following the Brazil international’s video, but coach Enrique has spoken out in defence of his player.

“We all know Alves, and whether his singing is appropriate or not is decided by each person individually,” he told the media, as reported by Goal. “I can tell you that he’s a winner.

“He brings a lot of joy to the team and his intention was not to both anyone, but to help,” he continued. “Like it or not, his goal was for the team.”

Barca’s form has dropped off in recent weeks as they have failed to consolidate their grip on top spot.

Having taken just one point from their last three matches, their lead at the top of the Spanish top flight has been cut to three points, and it’s imperative that the reigning champs see off troubled Valencia on Sunday in order to re-establish themselves at the top of the table.
