Arsenal agree terms with midfield target but stingy Wenger reluctant to meet £35m asking price

Arsenal appear to be well placed to sign Granit Xhaka in the summer, with Bleacher Report claiming that personal terms have been agreed in principle with the Switzerland midfielder.

According to Bleacher Report insider Dean Jones, the Gunners have been in dialogue with the Borussia Monchengladbach star over the past month and terms have been settled on.

But Jones adds that an obstacle to the transfer could be Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to do business with the Bundesliga club while their asking price for the 23-year-old stands at £35m.

Nevertheless, Jones understands that the Londoners are confident that they can haggle with Gladbach and knock down Xhaka’s valuation to make him an Arsenal player next season.

Wenger is notoriously stingy in the transfer market. He has only twice paid over £20m for players in his 19 years at Arsenal – Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – as The Telegraph reports.

Xhaka is not as flashy as the aforementioned duo – he has three goals and one assist this season – but his form of midfield aggression would make him a worthwhile gamble for Wenger.
