Manchester United old boy emerges as popular alternative to Jose Mourinho – report

According to The Sun, Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc is emerging as an unexpected late contender to take the Manchester United job.

While the Red Devils saw off Everton to advance to the FA Cup final at the weekend, uncertainty lingers around incumbent coach Louis van Gaal, who has hardly impressed this season.

The Dutch coach managed to restore some of the club’s lost lustre following David Moyes’ ill-fated regime, and qualified the Red Devils for the 2015-16 Champions League.

However, United were eliminated in the group stage of the competition, and are uncertain to return to next season’s tournament after a mixed campaign in the Premier League.

With four matches still to play—one fewer than the teams ahead of them—United sit in fifth on 59 points, five behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

As such, rumours persist about van Gaal’s future, with ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho the name most widely linked with the Old Trafford hotseat.

However, according to The Sun [as above], PSG coach Blanc is understood to enjoy the support of some members of the club’s board, with the tabloid reporting that the ex-Red Devils defender has emerged as a shock late contender to nab the top job at Old Trafford from Mourinho.
