Liverpool will continue their quest for European glory when they travel to Spain to take on Villarreal in the 1st leg of their Europa league semi-final.
Despite having accounted for Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund in the knock-out stages, the Reds face arguably their toughest challenge yet as face an unfancied, unheralded side that is currently sitting 4th in La Liga.
The Yellow Submarines are enjoying a stunning season and are on the brink of securing their place in the Champions League next season on merit, courtesy of their league position.
Their main threat comes in the form of Congo international striker, Cedric Bakambu. The forward has scored nine goals in nine Europa League starts and has formed a strong partnership with former Spurs striker Roberto Soldado.
The former Valencia striker has scored 8 goals in all competitions this season with an impressive 11 assists also contributed.
The pair will be up against a Liverpool defence minus Mamadou Sakho with the French International currently in the midst of a doping scandal.
Dejan Lovren is likely to be partnered by the evergreen Kolo Toure with Martin Skrtel in reserve.
If Villarreal has plenty of firepower than the same can be said of Jurgen Klopp’s men with Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino likely to lead the line.
The pair will be supported by Philippe Coutinho with the Brazilian playmaker key to the creative side of Liverpool’s game.
While both sets of players will be aware of the importance of the game, Klopp is not thinking of a place in the final, just yet.
Speaking ahead of the game, Klopp told reporters “It is important to understand my players came into a semi-final because they were always ready for the moment and never thought about the next round,” he said.
“It is important I show the players the respect they earned, which means I don’t need to speak to them about things they did well.
“We are here because we respected this tournament each round. There is no doubt from my side. Villarreal did the same until now so it is not about talking about the final”
It should be a difficult match for Klopp’s men, with Villarreal having an enviable home record, winning all six games and conceding only once.
That said, if Liverpool can find the net then that would certainly be a positive result to take back to Anfield.
The 2-1 correct score is available at around 10-1, and this price looks worthy – it should bring a handsome return and would set the tie up perfectly for another historical European night at Anfield.
