Liverpool face their latest date with destiny when they take on Villarreal in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final at Anfield on Thursday night.
The Reds, the Premier League’s sole survivor in Europe, need to overcome a 1-0 first leg deficit if they are reach the final.
Last time out the Reds acquitted themselves very much at the El Madrigal with the game’s only goal conceded in injury time. Defensively, Jurgen Klopp’s men were solid although they lacked a cutting edge up front.
With goals now key to their progress, Klopp is likely to turn to Daniel Sturridge. The England man was overlooked in Spain last week and cut an isolated figure in the 3-1 loss to Swansea on Sunday, however on his day he remains the club’s best finisher and should start.
Sturridge is likely to be partnered with Phillipe Coutinho with Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Christian Benteke vying for the final starting berth in the front three.
In midfield, Emre Can is expected to make his return after making a faster than expected recovery from an ankle injury. The German will be joined in midfield by James Milner, the Anfield side’s most creative player in 2016 and one of Joe Allen, Lucas and possibly Lallana if Firmino starts upfront.
In defence, Kolo Toure is set to partner Dejan Lovren once again while Alberto Moreno and Simon Mignolet will return to the side after being rested against the Swans.
Villarreal meanwhile have a fully fit squad to choose from, with defender Eric Bailly and forward Leo Baptistao recovered from injuries.
The Yellow Submarines are appearing in their fourth Europa League semi-final and will hope to make history on Merseyside by securing a first final appearance.
The winners of the Europa league will secure a place in the Champions League and while Liverpool would desperately love to secure their place in Europe’s elite competition, Villarreal have no such worries thanks to securing fourth spot in La Liga.
The Reds are predictably 8/11 favourites to win the game tonight, although it will be imperative that Jurgen Klopp’s side do not concede the away goal that could scupper their plans of making another European Final.
In recent months Anfield has been a difficult place to visit for away sides, with Liverpool unbeaten since January but Villarreal themselves have an impressive record on their travels so things will not be easy.
Failure to score that all important away goal in Spain could be Liverpool’s undoing, however whatever the result its sure to be an electric atmosphere on Merseyside.
