Neither Harry Kane nor Dele Alli won Tottenham supporters’ club player of the season…

If you are more popular with Tottenham Hotspur fans than both Harry Kane and Dele Alli, then you must be some player. Toby Alderweireld is some player.

The Spurs defender has been voted supporters’ club player of the season ahead of the Premier League’s top scorer Kane, and the PFA Young Player of the Year Alli.

The 26-year-old, signed last summer from Atletico Madrid, celebrated collecting his prize on Saturday with this tweet of him holding his well-deserved trophy.

Kane and Alli have understandably taken most of the headlines for Spurs this term, but this recognition shows how important Alderweireld’s contribution has been.

He has completely transformed Tottenham’s defensive fortunes. Last season, Spurs conceded 53 goals. With two games to go this campaign, they have let in only 28.

Alderweireld has played every minute of Tottenham’s league campaign, aside from the single one which he missed during Monday’s bruising 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

That was when Spurs’s Premier League dreams were finally dashed. Alderweireld’s impact was not enough to secure them the title, but it has been very significant.
