Atletico Madrid are out of the La Liga title race after they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Levante on Sunday.
Diego Simeone’s men were level with Barcelona at the top of the table prior to kick off, but coupled with the Catalan giants securing a 5-0 win over Espanyol, it sees Atleti fall three points adrift with an insurmountable inferior goal difference with one game remaining this season.
Giuseppe Rossi dealt the killer blow for the hosts, as he cooly slotted home in the closing stages of the game to leave the Atleti fans behind the goal crestfallen.
Although the capital club still have a chance of winning silverware this season given that they will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28, it will come as a bitter blow to see their title hopes end before the final weekend of the campaign.
While their absence now makes it a two-horse race for the La Liga title, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can pick up all three points at Granada next week while Real head to the Estadio Riazor to take on Deportivo with a slim chance of producing a shock.
