An eighty-eight-year-old woman has been beaten to death in a nursing home, reportedly following a row relating to Sunday’s Portuguese match between Maritimo and Benfica.

Mariana Vitória, resident of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia home in Ourique, is said to have been pummelled by a walking stick by her 69-year-old roommate on Sunday evening.

The alleged murderer is a woman who is under psychiatric care, and initial reports say that the motive lies in “a disagreement over the Sunday game between Maritimo and Benfica”.

She is a long-term resident of the Alentejan old people’s home, which is in association with the psychiatric service of Beja Hospital, where the Santiago de Cacém-born victim lived.

The accused has not yet been named as GNR Police (National Republican Guard) investigate the attack, which they believe happened at “around 11pm”, shortly after the conclusion of the match.

Benfica beat Maritimo 2-0 in a hotly-contested encounter which ended 10 a side, with Fransergio and Renato Sanches, whose move to Bayern Munich was confirmed today, sent off.
