This £20m Chelsea midfielder could be why Man United pulled plug on Renato Sanches deal

Manchester United withdrew their interest in Benfica sensation Renato Sanches to explore other transfer targets, according to The Mirror.

The 18-year-old midfielder has signed for Bayern Munich in a £28m deal which could eventually rise to £63m – fee reported by The Mirror.

Some United fans reacted angrily on social media when they thought that they had failed to secure the signature of the Portuguese starlet.

But The Mirror sources a United insider claiming that they stepped away from a potential move for Sanches to go for alternative targets.

Could that be Nemanja Matic? The Daily Mail understands that the Chelsea midfielder wants to leave the Blues, but remain in the Premier League.

That would make United favourites ahead of Juventus in the race for the Serbian, who The Mirror is tipping for a £20m switch to Old Trafford.

Matic was outstanding as Chelsea won the title in 2014-15, but is one of a number at Stamford Bridge to have suffered a dramatic dip in form this term.

The Daily Mail adds that he would be extra keen to join United if ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is indeed appointed as their manager in the summer.

The Red Devils prioritising 27-year-old Matic over Sanches might be a sign that they acknowledge their urgent midfield problems, and they would rather buy an experienced performer rather than a high-potential talent who may take some time to settle in England.
