John Terry addresses confirmation of new Chelsea contract offer

Chelsea legend John Terry has taken to Instagram to thank supporters for their well wishes after it was confirmed that the Blues had offered him a one-year extension.

The 35-year-old’s current deal is set to expire this summer, and it had appeared as though his time at Stamford Bridge was coming to an end.

However, it was confirmed on Friday that Terry was offered a new one-year deal, as reported by Sky Sports, and that the former England captain was in turn considering the offer.

The 35-year-old has made it clear at regular intervals in recent months that he would like to stay at the club, as he ultimately doesn’t have plans of calling time on his playing career at the end of this season.

After making his debut for the club in 1998, Terry has gone on to make 703 appearances for Chelsea since and has collected a whole host of silverware on the way.

In turn, he has established himself as a hero amongst the club’s supporters, and they will undoubtedly hope that he stays on for another year ahead of Antonio Conte’s arrival in west London this summer.

It is unclear as to whether or not the Italian tactician has had a significant input in the decision to offer the new deal, but there is no denying that he will benefit from having Terry’s leadership in the dressing room.

Nevertheless, it will now be down to Terry to consider the offer and decide whether or not it is a deal that he will sign off, as he hinted that it was a “different role” which may well involve a position behind the scenes as part of the coaching staff.

“Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. The contract extension the club has offered me is a different role and I hope everyone will understand I want to take the time to consider it carefully before making a decision.”
