Real Madrid offer £60m playmaker to Manchester United

Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Real Madrid star James Rodriguez this summer, but would have to break the British transfer record to do so.

The Colombian international has failed to have the desired impact in the Spanish capital, as he has struggled to establish himself in the team under both Rafael Benitez and Zinedine Zidane this season.

Such has been his struggle, that Real are willing to sell him for £3m less than what they signed him from Monaco for in 2014, despite the fact that he is still just 24 years of age and is undoubtedly more talented that he has shown this year.

The Daily Star claim that the offer was made by Rodriguez’s agent, Jorges Mendes, with the Red Devils now weighing up whether or not they should make a move for the playmaker.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema selected ahead of him, coupled with competition for places in midfield with the likes of Isco, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro, Rodriguez has essentially been crowded out in the Spanish capital.

Therefore, an exit this summer would make sense from his perspective in order to get his career back on track, and United could provide him with that opportunity as he would likely become a focal point in their team.

Much depends on what United choose to do moving forward in terms of Louis van Gaal’s future and their other moves in the transfer market, but there is no denying that Rodriguez would improve their squad.

Whether he fits into Van Gaal’s style of play is questionable though, and so it may come down to the Dutchman being replaced and establishing that his successor is willing to splash out on the Colombian.
