This Saturday, Crystal Palace and Manchester United will meet in a repeat of the 1990 FA Cup final.
On that occasion, an under-pressure Alex Ferguson beat Steve Coppell’s Palace after a replay (3-3, 1-0), a victory that led to an era of dominance for the Scot and United.
The meeting was also the last time a side featuring 11 English players took to the field for the FA Cup, with the Eagles again playing their part in history. This time out, both sides will be represented by multiple nationalities but while United are steeped in success, Palace could gain their first major trophy and secure European qualification for the first time in their history with a win.
Alan Pardew’s men needed look too far back for inspiration. In 2013, Wigan upset the odds to beat Manchester City and become the last first time winners of the cup.
Palace midfielder James McArthur was part of the Latic’s side that won three years ago and the Scottish midfielder is hoping to eclipse the achievements of his countryman, legendary forward Kenny Dalglish and claim two FA cup winners’ medals.
“Some people don’t get to one FA Cup Final but hopefully I’ll have the chance to play in two of them.” McArthur told Mailsport.
“I don’t think about it too deeply or compare myself to other Scottish players of the past. I’m just trying to win the trophy. I want to be fit enough to be involved on the day first and foremost.
“From there I want to get my hands on another medal. If I do that hopefully I’ll make my family and everyone around me proud.
McArthur is vying with Mile Jedinak for a place in the starting XI and if he is involved he will be keen to help Palace end a 6 game losing streak against the Red Devils.
Palace are boosted by the news that Yohan Cabaye and Connor Wickham, are fit while Wilfried Zaha and Bakary Sako are also expected to be available leaving only Joe Ledley as an injury worry.
United meanwhile will be keen to ease the pressure on Louis Van Gaal with a cup win. The Red Devils missed out on a Champions league spot despite a delayed 3-1 win over Bournemouth, the three points securing them 5th place.
The Dutch man will hope that Marcos Rojo, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are fit.
