Arsenal have confirmed that they have reached an agreement to sign Granit Xhaka, although they haven’t disclosed the fee involved.

The 23-year-old has signed a long-term contract and arrives after enjoying success both with Basel and Borussia Monchengladbach, as well as with the Swiss national team.

Arsene Wenger was evidently delighted with his latest acquisition, and believes that the midfielder will add a great deal to his squad as of next season.

“Granit Xhaka is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience,” he told the club’s official website.

“We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad. We wish Granit a good Euro 2016 with Switzerland and look forward to welcoming him to Arsenal ahead of next season.”

The report adds that Xhaka has completed his medical and will join up with his new teammates after Euro 2016 in July.

It will be a welcome boost for Arsenal fans to see the club act swiftly in the transfer market after another disappointing season saw them end the campaign without a trophy.

It will undoubtedly be hoped that Xhaka is just the first signing in Wenger’s plan to reshuffle his squad and strengthen, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Frenchman has set the tone for the summer transfer market or has merely wrapped up all the business that has planned for the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, it’s an exciting signing for the club with Xhaka expected to add quality and depth to their midfield options next season.
