Our writers say how Man United should line up next season under Jose Mourinho, including summer signings

Although it provides excellent coverage, BBC Sport is generally pretty boring.

I mean, nobody else would employ Alan Shearer for his dull opinions. Yes, he’s a legend, but I once read in a football Funfax that his nickname as a child was “Smokey”, because he liked Smokey Bacon crisps. He was even record-breakingly stale as a kid!

Nevertheless, to give the Beeb their due, their sports website currently has a very entertaining – yet simple – tool which allows you to select how Man United should line up next season.

United’s current players can all be picked, as can a selection of stars who have been linked with summer transfers to Old Trafford.

For a bit of office entertainment, I got the boys involved and asked them to send me their XIs.

Their brief was to pick the best side Mourinho could start next season with, but to be “realistic”.

I went first and was given untold levels of abuse for going 4-4-2, even though Leicester City showed that it still works. Furthermore, United mopped up in the 90s with 4-4-2 – it’s what the fans know, love and trust.

My only signings were Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez, Leicester’s N’Golo Kante and free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

United had the best back-four in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal, so why waste money trying to fix what isn’t broken?

That was my team. Yes, it might be a bit out there, but not when you compare it to what Jonathan Machlin sent over.

Antoine Griezmann would be amazing. And another pick for Bastian Schweinsteiger… Maybe he’ll get fit again and come good under Jose.
