Arsenal frontrunners for Bundesliga defender; will pay £19m release clause to fend off Man United

Arsenal are reportedly heading the chase for Ricardo Rodriguez, although Manchester United have also expressed an interest in signing the Wolfsburg defender.

Rodriguez has been linked to the Premier League over the last three summers, and Arsenal are the favourites to get him this time around, according to Kicker.

The German publication reports that the Swiss international has been highly recommended to the Gunners, who would be willing to pay his £19m release clause.

United would have no problem matching that figure if they pursued Rodriguez, but Luke Shaw returning from injury means that Jose Mourinho is well set at left-back.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also has a couple of options in that position. Nacho Monreal enjoyed an excellent 2015-16 campaign to demote Kieran Gibbs to the bench.

But The Mirror reports that Gibbs could be sold, which would create room for Rodriguez. The 23-year-old would arguably be a step up even on the consistent Monreal.

He has made 157 appearances in four years at Wolfsburg, scoring 20 goals. He is in Switzerland’s squad for Euro 2016, alongside new Gunners signing Granit Xhaka.
