Andy Murray will face a familiar foe, Stan Wawrinka on Friday as he continues his quest for a first ever French open final.
The Scottish star, a semi-finalists in 2011, 2014 and 2015, has never reached the final two in Roland Garros but having overcome local favourite Richard Gasquet confidence will be high in the Murray camp.
Murray beat the 9th side 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 6-2 in just over three hours. Murray lost the first set and needed a tie-break in the second however he eventually found his rhythm to comfortably win the final two sets and set up a meeting with Wawrinka.
A runner-up in Australia earlier in the year, Murray is bidding to become the first UK player since Bunny Austin in 1937 to secure a place in the final.
On that occasion Austin lost 6–1, 6–4, 6–3 to German star Henner Henkel and while Murray has a difficult task against 3 time grand slam winner Wawrinka he will hope to go one better than Austin.
Murray’s appearance in the final four puts him level with Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe for grand slam semi-final appearances but it is the prospect of a third major that really appeals to Murray and not unwanted records.
“I’m here to try to win the tournament, not to just make the final,” Murray told reporters in the aftermath of his win over Gasquet.
This will be the 16th meeting between Murray and Wawrinka, a quarter-final victor over surprise contender, Albert Ramos Vinolas.
Murray has won 8 of their previous 15 meetings with his Swiss counterpart claiming 7 victories. However on clay, Wawrinka is the undisputed champ with three victories and no defeats including a 6-1, 6-2 win in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters in 2013.
Murray will be looking to go one step further than his previous efforts having reached the semis three times previously having never reached the final at Roland Garros.
Of course his opponent Stan Wawrinka will prove a formidable challenge having won the tournament last year.
This looks like a great opportunity for Murray to progress however, who is playing some top quality tennis and looks good value to reach the pinnacle of clay court tennis, the French Open Final at Roland Garros.
No doubt if he can overcome his Swiss opponent today he will once again face Novak Djokovic in the final, but this really could be Murray’s year.
