International midfielder convinced to sign Manchester United contract after Mourinho phone call

Michael Carrick appears set to extend his stay at Manchester United after a phone call from Jose Mourinho persuaded the midfielder to sign a new deal.

According to The Sun, the newly appointed Portuguese coach called the England international—who has not been considered by Roy Hodgson for the European Championships—on his holidays in order to discuss his future.

The 34-year-old has come to the end of his contract at United, and had appeared to be on the brink of an exit from the club he has served since 2006.

The tabloid note that Mourinho still sees Carrick—who made 28 appearances last season—as a key figure at Old Trafford, and has informed the former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker that he will play a prominent role at the club next term.
