Manchester United set to axe experienced international after miserable EPL campaign

Manchester United are planning to part ways with Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer after an underwhelming campaign in the Premier League.

According to the Mirror, the Red Devils are plotting to axe the Germany international, who has struggled to impress since moving to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich last summer.

The 31-year-old managed just 18 appearances in the EPL—of which only 13 outings were starts—and scored one goal without contributing a single assist.

While Schweinsteiger—among the most decorated players in the division—could have been the cornerstone of United’s midfield under Louis van Gaal, his frequent absences ultimately prevented him from building up momentum during his maiden campaign with the club and he appeared to lose the trust of the Dutch coach.

Before last summer, Schweinsteiger had only ever previously represented Bayern during his senior career.

The experienced campaigner—who has been named in the Germany squad for this summer’s European Championships—won eight German titles during his time in Bavaria, as well as the 2013 Champions League.

He won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, and while he would also leave United with an FA Cup to his name, Schweinsteiger played no part in the final.
