Video: Sturridge grabs massive last gasp winner for England vs Wales

England got an injury time winner against Wales to get their first win of the Euros, with Daniel Sturridge getting the vital goal.

England were unquestionably the better side in the first half, but once again they flattered to deceive. Despite dominating possession and generally looking in control, they weren’t able to turn their dominance into a lead.

Raheem Sterling had the only really clear-cut chance of the first half, with a counter-attack ending in a fantastic cross from Adam Lallana. Sterling really messed up the finish though, going to ground unnecessarily and skewing it horribly off target.

Wales chances were few and far between, but when Wayne Rooney gifted them a free-kick they made the most of it. Gareth Bale fired a shot towards goal, and Joe Hart made a real meal of it; palming it into his own goal when he really should have pushed it wide.

Roy Hodgson made changes in the second half to change a system that just wasn’t working – bringing Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy on for Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling. The tactical tweak paid off, as both substitutes scored in the second half.

Vardy got the first, with the ball falling to him in the box opportunely. He looked to be a mile offside, but the linesman did fantastically to notice that the header that fell Vardy’s way was off Ashley Williams. The Leicester City star tucked it home, and England were back on level terms.

There was then a period of pressure from England, but Wales really didn’t look like conceding. Sturridge had other ideas though, and after a quick passing move the Liverpool man was able to bundle the ball over the line.

This win puts England top of the group, and they will be incredibly confident of staying there with their next match being against Slovakia.
