Euro 2016: Key England man to be benched vs Slovakia in major gamble by manager

Posted by

When England take the field against Slovakia on Monday they will most likely be without captain Wayne Rooney, who is poised to spend the match on the bench.

According to the Telegraph, Wayne Rooney is expected to be benched against Slovakia in an effort by head coach Roy Hodgson to give the England captain some rest.

Rooney was substituted during England’s 1-1 draw against Russia, with Hodgson later claiming that Rooney was tired – a claim the England captain denied.

If Rooney is benched, defender Gary Cahill will most likely wear the captain’s armband for the match against Slovakia.

England will win Group B with a win over Slovakia. However, a draw would open the door for Wales to take the top spot. A loss would prevent them from winning the group and could cause them to drop as low as third.
