Aubameyang to Arsenal odds SLASHED after Jamie Vardy snubs move to Emirates Stadium

Leading bookmaker bwin are reporting a flurry of bets on Arsenal signing Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang after they missed out on Jamie Vardy.

England forward Vardy has rejected the chance to join the Gunners, who triggered his release clause, by signing a new four-year contract with Premier League champions Leicester City.

Could Arsene Wenger now turn his attention to prolific Gabonese hitman Aubameyang in his search for the striker that could finally take Arsenal to their first title since 2004?

The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with Manchester City, but there has been significant betting in Germany which suggests that he could be bound for the Emirates instead, with the odds slashing to 4/1 from 12/1 at the start of the day.

Glenn Woodage, bookmaker at bwin, commented: “With Vardy turning his nose up at Arsenal to remain at Leicester City, the pressure’s on Wenger to deliver his first world class striker since Robin van Persie. Aubameyang’s move to City is stalling and Arsenal are good value to swoop in and snatch him from beneath [Pep] Guardiola’s nose and the odds agree.”

Aubameyang scored 36 goals in all competitions last season, including a Bundesliga total of 25 in 28 starts which was only bettered by Bayern Munich rival Robert Lewandowski.

If their failure to land Vardy prompts the Gunners to pursue the 2016 African Footballer of the Year, then giddy Arsenal supporters are likely to be ecstatic with their plan B.
