UPDATE! Chris Smalling latest: Man United star poisoned, but reason for being in hospital not as glamorous as first claimed

Chris Smalling is having a pretty rough summer. He was an ever-present in England’s rotten Euro 2016 campaign and now the Manchester United defender has suffered an injury while surfing in Bali, according to rumours on social media.

This photo is circulating around Twitter, showing a bashed up male fitting Smalling’s rough profile signing a Man United jersey while laying in a hospital bed, while his full name is written on an apparent hospital document.

Photoshop is, of course, a powerful tool, so suspicion is natural, but this could well be genuine.

Smalling is indeed in Bali on holiday.

Furthermore, surfing can indeed be a very dangerous past-time!

The signature in the photo also matches Smalling’s.

British tabloid The Sun have also reported on the story, claiming that Smalling may have fallen heavily on his head during surfing lessons, adding that a jellyfish sting could have been involved – to add insult to injury.

Let’s just hope he’s ok, whoever he is.
