Liverpool could end frustrating midfielder pursuit with swoop for £25m-rated Tottenham target

Liverpool could reportedly turn to Newcastle United star Georginio Wijnaldum in their attempt to sign a new attack-minded midfielder this summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, their attempts to recruit either Piotr Zielinski from Empoli or Mahmoud Damoud from Borussia Monchengladbach have reached a dead end.

Jurgen Klopp is now interested in signing Wijnaldum, but this could be another difficult deal for the Reds to strike because of Newcastle’s asking price.

The Daily Mail reports that the relegated Magpies want £25m for the Netherlands international, who scored 11 goals in his debut Premier League season.

Tottenham Hotspur are heading the chase for the 25-year-old, but the Daily Mail understands that they and Liverpool are both reluctant to meet the valuation.

However, the Reds are in talks with Bournemouth about the £15m sale of Jordon Ibe – fee reported by BBC Sport – so may soon have some extra funds to go after Wijnaldum.
