AC Milan are reportedly in advanced negotiations for the signing of Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio in a deal potentially worth €25m.
The 26-year-old has emerged as a top target for the Rossoneri, with new coach Vincenzo Montella looking to strengthen his squad where possible.
With a defensive partner for Alessio Romagnoli high on his agenda this summer, it appears as though he’s settled on Musacchio, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Argentine defender has reportedly made it clear to friends and teammates that he has no intention of staying with the La Liga outfit, and that he’s ready to make the move to Serie A.
Further, Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has been in Ibiza this week to agree on terms of the deal, with Gazzetta suggesting that a fee between €20m-€25m will be enough to reach an agreement on a fee.
Montella will have ambitious plans to stamp his mark on the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, and he has quite the job on his hands considering the changes that he needs to make.
The former Fiorentina and Sampdoria has built a reputation for ensuring that his sides play an expansive style of football, and with a lack of creativity in the current Milan team, he’ll need to address various weaknesses.
That includes the central positions in his defence, with Romagnoli requiring an experienced and talented individual next to him.
Musacchio has proven his class in recent years, helping Villarreal to a fourth-place finish in La Liga last season, and he will likely relish the opportunity to prove himself at the San Siro next season should a move be completed.
