Portugal made history winning the European Championship for the first time following their 1-0 victory over France in the Euro 2016 final at the Stade de France.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to make up for losing the final on home soil to Greece 12 years ago but his game was cut short following a collision with France attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet.

Despite coming back on after the initial challenge Ronaldo was unable to continue and brought to tears as he was stretchered off and replaced by Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma.

Ronaldo did not however, abandon his team and was the most animated person on the Portugal touchline willing his teammates on, whispering messages in their ears and acting as an assistant manager.

After lifting the trophy for the first time in his career Ronaldo tweeted that he was ‘proud’ of what the team had achieved.

Ronaldo also tweeted a picture of his post-match celebrations on twitter and you can just see how much it meant to him.
